Rick Brandenburg shoot for Lawn & Landscape, GIE Media

GIE Media contracted me to shoot Dr. Rick Brandenburg for their October "Leadership" issue of Lawn & Landscape magazine. I met Dr. Brandenburg and his staff out at the NC State Turfgrass & Environmental Research facility on Lake Wheeler Rd. It was an impressive site, with lots of activity taking place. Rick was adamant about having his staff featured in the photos as well since he believes very strongly about team work.

The conditions were typical for July in the South. Hot and humid. I balanced the flash for fill and used the sun as my main light. The interior shots were pretty straight forward except the yucky fluorescent lights...

Another one from Alaina and TJ's wedding.

Custom duotone I made inside Lightroom. Sometimes the candids make the best shots...

Incredible wedding last night

I'm totally spent.

Just got up from a nap.

It was as humid as I've ever shot.

The location was incredible... a castle.

I shot more images than any wedding previously.

Many, many were great! This particular shot is becoming a sort of signature for me.

Shawn from Dash Photography helped me out too. Thanks man, that was huge.

Looking forward to publishing some more images from this fairy tale wedding!

Fixed gears, red boilers and hearts

Last night I joined several of my riding buddies in downtown Raleigh for some riding and photography. My friend Jason built up a nice old Raleigh bike as a fixed gear and wanted some cool shots for his apartment. The above shot is at an old boiler turned modern art. I used my new heart bokeh trick as well as some colored gels.

I really like this last shot. It might as well be Paris instead of Raleigh. I used a flash to camera left with an amber gel to simulate sunset. I need to shoot more for myself as it really allows me to expand and experiment.

Flags and Hearts

Beautiful day this past weekend. No weddings or shoots and I spent the day with my family. My flag out the front door was looking rather nice.

I also got some time to experiment. I saw a post on DIYphotography.net about creating heart shape bokeh (or out of focus highlights for my non photographer readers). When I saw this, I knew I had to try it.

My first two shots are experimental and very basic. That's a rope of lights (green) and the second photo is one single light. The lights were about two feet back from the subject. I envision using this technique for reception shots where there are lots of sparkling lights to catch in the background. I'm going to make some other shapes too... diamonds, dog bones, chevy bowtie, fish... this could be very fun. No photoshop tricks in these photos. That's all in camera.

Cover of Lawn & Landscape Magazine July 2007

Mark Rook from GIE Media sent me the PDF for the cover of Lawn & Landscape magazine. I shot this about 5 weeks ago for the magazine and they chose six photos. I'm looking forward to seeing the inside spread as well. GIE Media recently contacted me for another magazine shoot. I hope this is the start of good things to come....

Big Hair

Hannah styling the latest trend in hairstyles.

Tech: Viv 285 into soft umbrella fired via PWs. Trying a single light set-up.

They were giving the wigs out at the movie theatre for a promo. Hannah wore that thing with honor as we shopped around North Hills.

My progression to Lightroom for photo processing is coming along nicely. I've immersed myself in Scott Kelby's Lightroom Book (great book).

What a great piece of software. It's going to improve my images, increase my turn around time, make stunning galleries and promote one look and feel for everything Tim Broyer Photography related. If you are into digital photography, look at Lightroom. It's that good.

Couple more from Sarah & Josh

I'm still going through the images from Sarah & Josh. I could probably weed out some more and reduce the total amount of images, but I really came home with a large amount of keepers and a fairly nice sum of great images. Here's two more for the world.

Shallow depth of field and a high ISO used here.

First dance. I intentionally framed the cross in the photo. In photoshop, I added a angel glow and a slight vignette to the frame. I bet this would work in black & white also.

Lastly, another attempt at the Dave Hill look.

This attempt is better than my last one, but a far cry from Dave Hill. It still has a certain edgy, Rolling Stone kind of look to it. The jail cell bars work with this type of look too I think. Your comments?

The kids are all right

No gigs this past weekend and that gave me a chance to catch up on some chores around the office. It comes as no surprise that when I'm in the office my daughter comes in. This time, she brought some buddies. From L-R, Hannah, Henry, Sophie and Will. I lit this with two strobes. One Viv 285 to camera right into a soft umbrella as a main light. One SB-800 to camera left into a soft umbrella as a little fill (could probably have used a touch more). What's so special? This image was processed in Lightroom.

Well, this post marks my transition to Adobe Lightroom for my image processing. I purchased a copy of it last week along with Scott Kelby's LR book. I'm going to commit myself to this product for many reasons. I'm just not getting the results I think I should have from Bibble for RAW processing. LR offers more tools and image controls not to mention library and HTML tools. By getting on the LR band wagon now, I will save money when it comes time to upgrade. Bibble would have cost me to upgrade as well. Bibble is not mainstream so online advice is lacking. Many quirks in Bibble not to mention it looks homemade. Don't get me wrong, Bibble is good product but I want excellence now.

My next wedding will be all LR and some Photoshop.

NEWS FLASH! Sarah & Josh BUSTED at their wedding!

I had the privelage of shooting Josh and Sarah this past weekend before I left for our family vacation. The wedding was in a gorgeous church in Greenville, NC. It was a target rich environment to make some great images. It certainly helped that Sarah and Josh were willing to do whatever I wanted!!!!

I can't wait to share more images from this wedding. Perhaps some of my finest work to date will be displayed from it.

These two images were taken in the court yard of the church. It's an entrance to the one of the church towers. We had fun in there!

This is the very last photo I took this day. I think it came out pretty darn good. I used two strobes on this. One to light the bride and the other on the groom. Sarah and Josh were great to work with. I never felt rushed or in the way. Thanks guys.
