Wedding portraits

As I go through the images from Nancy and Tommy's wedding, I'm really happy with the captures from the mini portrait session we had at the old State Capital building. We worked fast, dodged the hot sun and came away with some nice stuff. I've dones some photo shop treatment to these images as well. Tell me what you think?

Nancy & Tommy preview

Saturday was the wedding of Nancy and Tommy. It was a wonderful ceremony followed by a quick trip downtown for some portraits. I can't wait to share some more photos but all I have time for today is this one. I've got a lot of work to process their photos.

This is an outtake from the cityscape portraits. The groomsmen had me in stitches the whole day!

Soundslides

I'm testing some new web software for slideshows. It's a beta release of Soundslides. It's really geared towards journalism but I have other plans for it! (insert Dr. Evil laugh now). I'm thinking it could work for my website as well as commercial applications. I would love to hear any feedback you might have.

Here's a test run of some random photos of my daughter. I call it "6"

go to 6

Big wedding tomorrow and I'm excited about it!

Shenandoah Strobist

I spent the last weekend with my buddies doing some mountain biking in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. 8 of us took off on Thursday and cycled each day in the mountains. What a treat and I really needed a change before wedding season kicks in full swing. The first day was too rainy to bring my camera, but the remaining two days were wonderful. On Saturday we did the Southern Traverse trail. It's an historical trail with history back to the Civil War. All toll, we rode 32 miles and finished under darkness.

The following picture is my buddy Ben. I set up a remote strobe to camera leftright by strapping it to a tree and fired it with a pocket wizard. Yes, I humped all that camera gear for 32 miles up and down the mountain.

I'll post up some more tomorrow too.

Erin & Donny's gallery is ready for viewing

Erin, if you're reading this please give me a call! The wedding was great and I'm rather proud of several images! Have a look. http://timbroyer.com/gallery/Clients/07/Erin_Donny_070428
It's a large gallery and might take a minute or two to load up.

The weather was great, the inn was fantastic, the families were wonderful. I couldn't ask for anything better.

More old camera's

I got a chance to practice some product photography in the studio last night. I have a collection of antique camera's, mostly Kodak's, that I've acquired over the years. Most of them are from flea markets.

I have a roll of seamless paper on the wall and I used one strobe with a softlight umbrella at 1/8 power. I also used a piece of white foam core to subject right for fill. I played with the placement of the the main light until I got the results I was looking for. I'd like to get a little more fade in the background but my studio is a little cramped and might need a re-arrangement.

I'd also say that using a flash meter is a huge time saver. I'm currently reading the recently released 3rd edition of Light, Science & Magic. I wish I had read this book earlier and it is the bible of lighting. The best photography book I've read to date.

New Hope Valley Railway

The #17 steam engine underwent repairs over the winter. Engineers were inspecting her for her first run since the rebuild.
I only wish I got a model release from this engineer.

self portrait

What happens when you leave a photographer alone for a couple hours with all of his equipment? They inevitably start taking pictures. Such is the case for me yesterday afternoon. I hardly ever take self portraits but it is a good exercise and I was getting a chance to work with some lighting tricks in my mini studio.

I present my self portrait.

This is by no means a unique idea in photography but I've always wanted to give it a shot.

Custom Quadtone

As much as I like a good, high contrast black and white print, I also enjoy multi-tone effects as well. With today's modern photoshop treatments, the sky is the limit. This photo has a blend of four different tones. The first is solid black. I then added a soft gray, a very light pastel pink and very light mustard yellow. Along with a nice soft effect it completely changes the feel of the photo. This shot was taken seconds after the previous one below yet it offers a different mood.

I like to find out what colors work for a couple and incorporate them into a multi-tone image. I envision a set of portraits with tones that compliment the current colors associated with the room. The sky is the limit.

Black and White: Every wedding should have them

Man, I love a good black and white. Not every photograph can benefit from it but others just scream it. This particular was screaming at me. The B&W helps bring out the veil and I like the hard contrast, edge look it brings. The color version isn't half as nice.

All weddings need black and white...

arghhh... website problems

Timbroyer.com and this blog have been experiencing issues the last couple days. I'm in contact with my web hosting company (as are several thousand other website owners!) about the issue. To be honest, I'm very dissapointed with PowWeb and will be getting a new host sometime this summer. My email wasn't even working....

Other than that, everything is great! I'll be working on a self-portrait this weekend as a self-imposed assignment.

cheers...
