Back to work

Thanksgiving is over and I'm hitting the photos hard this week. I need to get some out to clients before the holidays.

Here's one this morning that I can sympothize with!

My season is winding down...

I'm working on my last wedding of the year. Tamatha and Michael had a nice service in Cary last week. Overall the wedding went well for me and I worked on my off-camera lighting a bit. I still need work on the formals, ughh.

Here is a shot I tried. I was looking for a pair of hearts shadow cast from the two rings. It came out okay I think, but I can make it work better next time. It was quick and dirty with one remote flash, held by the groom, casting the shadow on the bible. He was impressed. I'm not as I think I could do it better next time. I can't take credit for the composition of the photo, as it's a staple in many a wedding photographers bag of tricks.

I'm looking forward to the break from the weddings. I plan on making some big changes to the business, website and marketing. I'm also going to practice some tricks of the trade. Should be a good winter for experimenting.

Valerie and Paul

I'm dreadfully behind on some of my post processing of images, but I'm rapidly catching up. I shot a very nice wedding at the B&B in Apex on 10/28. Valerie had booked me site unseen from her home in Washington state, so I was a little nervous. It helped that I had shot a couple weddings at the inn before, but I still like to at least meet the couple beforehand.

Valerie and Paul were great! It was a simple, elegant affair and these two were clearly in love with each other. I try to create photos that capture that special bond between a couple. Sometimes it's a challenge, especially getting some grooms to come out of their shell. This was not the case with Paul and Valerie. I merely documented the event and had a nice session away from the family. The weather was as good as it gets too. As I drove away from the event, I grinned knowing that I had caught some great photos for a wonderful family.

And there are plenty more to come. These aren't even the in the top ten.

Also, I'm not liking what blogger does to the images. It shrinks them down to fit in the blog and thus affects the quality and appearance. If you click on the image, it opens in it's own window and is clearly better quality. Hmmm...

Tammy & David Slideshow

I finally got through all the images for David and Tammy. I hope they are ready for 400 images and there are some good ones!

The slideshow has about 30 of my favorites, but there are many more.

It was a rainy Sunday this past weekend and I knocked out a bunch of photoshop work. I still need to refine my process to speed it up.

One of my favorites from the wedding and perhaps the cutest flower girl I've seen since June.

Bigger bag of tricks

It seems being a good photographer is mastering your equipment. I've also come to learn that great photos are generally accomplished with great equipment. Well lit photos are well lit. Occasionally you can grab a photo with just a camera and a lense that will be stunning, but more often than not you need to plan the shot, set up, provide the light and balance it, pose it perhaps and expose it properly. With all the tools available to a photographer, it's a juggling game of creativity and technical mastering. I love it.

A while back, one of my brides asked about a fisheye lens. I sold an older lens and dipped into the savings and sprung for a Nikon 10.5 f2.8 fisheye. It won't get used a ton, but I suspect it will give me a slight advantage in the overall coverage of weddings and corporate portraiture.

Another of Tammy and David

Man is it ever slow going through and adjusting 400 photos for a gig. I've got to figure out faster methods.

Here's a nice one from today.
